Women And Work Life Balance

Full time mums really need to try and fit in jobs around school or daycare hours, but there are lots of different positions that you can try out. Schools are often a great place to work in, since you are able to work hours that are not longer than your childrens school days, so you can pick them up from school. Daycare is normally covered from around 7am to 6pm, so if you can afford it, and your child is not yet of school age, this may give you more flexibility in the role you look for.

One thing you have to think about, is that neither schools nor childcarers will take in a sick child. You will need to stay home and look after them, unless there is someone else in the family that is willing and/or able to to this. Plus a sick child usually really wants their Mum, so you would be very torn by leaving them with someone else anyway. Parental leave is at your employers discretion. You may be lucky and be able to take the odd day here and there without losing holiday or pay, but of course, there are going to be employers who are less flexible with regards to such arrangements.

As a Mum who needs to work, you are probably going to drop your child off at school, in the car, on your way into work. This brings up another issue of lack of exercise in children. Children who bike or walk to school are very likely to feel more awake and refreshed when they get there, than those who have traveled in a car. Naturally a child who is lively and not lethargic is going to be able to concentrate better at lessons.

With the above factors in mind you may want to think about investing in a home based business. This is becoming more and more popular with Mums who need to work, and it does offer complete flexibility around the hours that are worked. Ask around and use your ready-made network of working mums to see if any of them are working for themselves and bounce ideas off of each other. Also, look to join some online newsgroups both for mums and others looking to do the same as you are.

Perhaps one of the biggest benefits in working for yourself from home, is the excellent option it provides for mums to stay at home and mind their children but also to re-enter the workforce again. For many work-at-home mums, having their own business is a rewarding and highly satisfactory thing to do.
